Important Traffic Information for Your Drive to Hamburg

Especially during holiday periods, roads and motorways in Germany, including those in and around Hamburg, are heavily trafficked. We have compiled an overview here with useful tips and traffic information so you can arrive at the airport stress-free. Please always plan a generous time buffer!

    Connection and the A7 Construction

You can reach **Hamburg Airport** very well by car, as it is located directly on the **A7 motorway**. Warning: The A7 is currently being expanded, which can unfortunately lead to increased risk of traffic jams. Therefore, please be sure to check the current traffic situation on the A7 and around the Elbe Tunnel before starting your journey.

    Travel Times Under Normal Conditions

Under normal traffic conditions, you can expect the following estimated travel times:

    • Hanover to Hamburg Airport; via the A7 = 171 km; approx. 2 hrs driving
    • Bremen to Hamburg Airport; via the A1 = 137 km; approx. 1:30 hrs driving
    • Berlin to Hamburg Airport; via the A24 = 295 km; approx. 3:30 hrs driving

Important Information for Drivers in Germany

Even if you are already familiar with traffic regulations, a refresher on mandatory duties is important. Pay attention to these details for a safe and legally compliant trip:

    Safety Vest is Mandatory

Since 2014, every driver in Germany is obliged to carry at least one **safety vest** (Warnweste) in their vehicle. In the event of a breakdown or accident, you must put on this vest before placing the warning triangle. Your safety comes first!

Speed Camera Warning Devices are Prohibited

The use of technical devices that warn of traffic monitoring measures (such as fixed or mobile speed cameras) is **generally prohibited** in Germany. This includes auxiliary functions of navigation devices (like TomTom) as well as specific smartphone apps. To travel legally, you must deactivate these warning functions before setting off.
