When you’re travelling with just hand luggage, it’s really important to make sure you don’t exceed the limits given by the airline you’re flying with. The top 10 biggest airlines in Europe, plus their hand luggage limitations are listed below.
Ryanair
Ryanair is the most well-known budget airline in Europe. It flies to a long list of European destinations, including Cologne-Bonn, Venice, and Ibiza airport. You can take a free small bag onboard with you, but it must fit under the seat in front of you. The maximum size of this item is 40cm x 20cm x 25cm. Alternatively, you can pay for a carry onboard cabin bag with a maximum weight of 10kg. This can be stored in the overhead locker and can’t be sized larger than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm.
easyJet
easyJet is another relatively cheap airline that flies between primarily European destinations, such as Lisbon and Madrid. A free cabin bag, measuring up to 45cm x 36cm x 20cm can be taken onboard. It must fit under the seat in front of you and it can weigh up to 15kg. Fees can be paid for a large cabin bag, with maximum dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm and a maximum weight of 15kg too. Some fares can include the large cabin bag, so do check at the time of booking.
Turkish Airlines
Cabin bags with Turkish Airlines are free of charge in the passenger cabin. In economy class, there is a single carry-on limit, and it must weigh no more than 8kg. Additionally, it must measure less than 23cm x 40cm x 55cm. In business class, passengers are allowed two pieces of carry-on luggage. Both items must meet the same dimensions and weights as listed above.
Lufthansa
Flying with Lufthansa and what the cabin bag limitations are does depend on which cabin you are flying in. For economy or premium economy cabins, the limit is one item of carry-on baggage of up to 8kg in weight. In business or first class, you are entitled to take two carry-on bags, again with each weighing a maximum of 8kg. Dimensions for any carry-on bags is 55cm x 40cm x 23cm, regardless of cabin class.
Wizz Air
Wizz Air allows for a free carry-on bag that fits underneath the seat in front of you. This can’t weigh more than 10kg and must not exceed 40cm x 30cm x 20cm in weight. If you want to take on a cabin bag for the overhead locker, it should weigh less than 10kg and be less than 55cm x 40cm x 23cm. The fees for this bag require you to purchase WIZZ Priority, which also gives you priority boarding and priority check-in. Fees vary, so it’s best to check at the time of making your booking.
Vueling
Bags that fit under the seat in front are free of charge. They must be under 40cm x 20cm x 30cm. Fares that include a cabin bag for the overhead locker have a weight limit of 10kg and a dimension limit of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm too. Fees do vary for this bag depending on the route and when you pay for it.
British Airways
On all British Airways flights, you can take one personal item of up to 40cm x 30cm x 15cm, weighing up to 23kg. This should fit under the seat in front of you. You can also take another 23kg cabin bag for the overhead locker, which can measure 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. These limits are the same throughout all of the BA cabins.
SAS
Under the seat cabin bags have a maximum size of 40cm x 30cm x 15cm, while carry-on bags placed in the overhead compartment have a maximum size of 55cm x 40cm x 23cm and a maximum weight of 8kg. If you have an SAS Go Smart, SAS Go Pro, SAS Plus Smart, SAS Plus Pro, SAS Go Bonus, or SAS plus Bonus ticket, you are entitled to one carry-on bag. SAS Go Light does not include a carry-on bag. The exception to this is for flights to or from Asia, Canada and the US. Some fares for these routes allow for one carry-on cabin bag, while others include two cabin bags.
Air France
In economy, you can take one cabin bag and one personal item. In other cabins, you can take two cabin bags and one personal item. Bags for the overhead locker should meet the 55cm x 35cm x 25cm limit, and not weigh more than 12kg in economy or premium economy, or 18kg in other cabins.
Pegasus
Pegasus has a new cabin bag rule, which is that you can only bring one item of cabin baggage onboard. It must measure 55cm x 40cm x 20cm or less.
